Known as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’, Mazatlán is a large coastal city located in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Mazatlán Neighbourhoods to check out

There are two primary districts bustling with tourists and cultural activities, split between the major coastal areas connected via the Malecón – one of the world’s longest (approx. 21km/13 miles) oceanfront boardwalks.

• Centro Histórico (Old Town) – Located to the south, this district is the cultural heart of the city, full of cobblestone streets, classical architecture and plazas.
• Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) – Located to the north, this area is a tourist hub, with sandy beaches surrounded by hotels, shopping, and nightlife.

Note: An area to keep an eye out for is further north, called Nuevo Mazatlán, currently extending that area to include modern and high-end real estate and resorts.

Top attractions and things to do in Mazatlán

• The Malecón – previously mentioned boardwalk is the staple of the city, so make sure you’re not leaving without seeing it first!
• El Faro Lighthouse – offering scenic, panoramic city views, this lighthouse is perched atop the Cerro del Crestón.
• Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception – a breath-taking 19th-century church right in the city centre of Mazatlán, in a Neo-Gothic style.
• Gran Acuarion Mazatlán – an aquarium focusing on marine education and conservation of the area of the Sea of Cortez.
• Stone Island (Isla de las Piedros) – this close-by peninsula offers open-air restaurants, calm swimming waters and tourist attractions, such as ATV tours.
• Cliff Divers (Clavadistas) – another not to miss attraction of Mazatlán are the local divers plunging in a historic tradition from high ocean rocks into shallow coastal waters. The performance is free to view but tipping is highly expected.

Iconic Mazatlán dishes and drinks to try

Seafood:

• Aguachile – spicy and cold Sinaloan dish made of raw shrimps submerged in a marinade made of lime juice, salt, crushed chiltepin peppers, cucumbers and red onion.
• Pescado Zarandeado – this iconic grilled fish (usually a snapper or a seabass) is butterflied in a marinade of chillies and spices, cooked slowly over an open fire.
• Tacos de Gobernador – Governor’s Tacos, which originate from Sinaloa, featuring Mexican seafood, topped with cheese, onions, tomatoes and peppers.
• Coctel de Camarón – chilled or at room temperature shrimp cocktails served with tomatoes, onions, avocado and seafood broth.

Local Meats:

• Chilorio – slow-cooked shredded pork, served with rich sauce, served in a warm tortilla.
• Asado Mazatleco – crispy fried potatoes served with cubes of beef or pork, with veggies and local cheese, all in a tomato-based broth.
• Chorreadas – corn masa tortilla rubbed with pork lard and topped up with grilled carne asada and local cheese.

Down it all with Cerveza Pacífico (Mazatlán’s pilsner-style lager) or Tonicol (vanilla-flavoured carbonated soda produced locally).

Best time to visit Mazatlán

The best time to visit Mazatlán is between the months of November and April, as it offers the ideal weather conditions – warm, dry days with little to no rain. October and May, as the shoulder season, might be a bit rainier, but it should help you avoid a large number of tourists.

When getting around Mazatlán, take advantage of the city’s open-air golf cart taxis, called Pulmonías, for fun daytime transit.
