Alaska
Alaska is the largest state, by area, in the United States. It is arguably also one of their most naturally stunning ones. Filled with the seemingly endless great outdoors, breathtaking beauty and incredible native culture, Alaska offers much to visit and experience – from simple sightseeing, to glacier hiking, fishing, whale watching, skiing, snowboarding, dog sledging, and many more.

Start your adventure via roads, trains, planes, or like me, via a cruise ship. I travelled to Alaska in May of 2024 on board the Norwegian Bliss, one of the ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet. I found cruising a safe travel option, particularly for solo travellers, that allows you to visit many places in a relatively short time. This is particularly true for Alaska, as its coastline is longer than that of all remaining 49 states combined.
Out of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, Alaska is home to 17 of them, including the highest named Denali – whose Alaskan name translates to ‘The Great One’.
Alaska’s population density is the lowest in the country. It is one person per square mile. To put it into context, if that was the case for Manhattan, New York, 16 people would be living on the island.
With its geographical location, Alaska is located only 50 miles away from Russia, which would be less than an hour’s drive.
