‘On the Edge’ by Richard Hammond, Book Review

On the edge by richard hammond

Richard Hammond is, arguably, most well known from his role as the television presenter of popular motorsport show ‘Top Gear’, back in the day, and ‘The Grand Tour’ more recently.

In this memoir, published first in 2008, Richard and his wife Mindy recount the story of high speed crash, which left Richard with serious brain injury, back in September of 2006. ‘On the Edge’ starts off with Hammond’s recollection of the past, sharing a glimpse into his life, filled with adrenaline chasing and incidents from early on. He briefly recounts events of his childhood, transition into adolescence that followed, and continued obsession with vehicles and speed.

After going through local radio jobs, jumping then into television, Hammond eventually ends up at the show many people love (or hate) called ‘Top Gear’ – a British motoring based entertaining show. It is while working for ‘Top Gear’, in September 2006, Richard is involved in a high speed crash while driving a jet-powered dragster. Mindy tells of the horrible hours that follow, seeing her husband injured and in a coma. As days of waiting and watching go by, Mindy shares with us the anxiety she faced until his waking, Later on, both of them recall the days, weeks and months of recovery, both physical and mental, that followed – trying to stick together pieces that shattered.

This truly is an incredible story of overcoming an injury, both individually and as partners. Mindy’s perspective takes over during Richard’s immediate accident and it is wholeheartedly gripping. I could feel her anxiety as she recalled her experience. Paired with Hammond’s wit and unique sense of humour, but also passion and incredible writing skills, made for a compelling audiobook to listen to. They were both very honest about their journey through this horrifying accident but also, remarkable recovery.

I think it’s just one of those short listens that shed a light on a particular situation and if you’re a fan of Hammond’s adventures and their consequences, or simply enjoy his presentation skills, you should check out this read.
