Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat

Narrated by the man himself, ‘Diddly Squat: A Year on the Farm’ is an audiobook compiled from the newspaper columns written by Jeremy regarding his farm so fancifully named ‘Diddly Squat’.

Primarily known as a broadcaster, writer and a face of famous motoring programmes – Top Gear and The Grand Tour, Jeremy faces a new challenge of the unfamiliar as he decides to stop delegating his farming work to others, and do it himself. In this audiobook he takes us behind the scenes of Diddly Squat farm and what it entails.

He’s got some backup though, most notably his girlfriend Lisa and a farmhand Kaleb, as well as others. And so as a team they dive into the work on the farm.

Jeremy talks us through his day to day duties and ventures at the picturesque Diddly Squat, located in the fields of Cotswolds – growing and preparing crops, keeping bees and other livestock, bottling up spring water and try and open up a shop. And he does so in the classic Jeremy Clarkson style that we came to known, with intelligent humour to it that is hard not to like.

I enjoyed this audiobook far more than I was expecting to. Jeremy remains very self-aware of his shortcomings as a first time farmer but remains curious and driven to learn. His writing style is not only captivating but also insightful with the information he goes through, and as someone who has no experience with farming myself, I might have actually learned a thing or two.

If you dislike Jeremy Clarkson, don’t pick up this book – you’ll most likely be offended by his remarks. However, if you do, I’d recommend it, it makes for a great read/listen. I know there’s also a television show about Diddly Squat farm, but I haven’t checked it out yet.
